Numerical investigation of transverse steel damper (TSD) seismic system for suspension bridges considering pounding between girder and towers

Transverse steel damper (TSD) is a promising passive control device used for seismic isolation and has been validated to feasibly balance the girder transverse displacement inertial force in cable-stayed bridges. However, TSD system, pounding could occur at locations of tower legs when gap size insufficient accommodate girder-support relative under major earthquakes. can significantly affect dynamic responses bridge structures, hence, present paper investigates effectiveness as strategy long-span structures (i.e., suspension bridges), accounting also influence effect response analysis. A typical considered case study purposes, four connection systems are investigated, including conventional fixed sliding-free connections with without effect. comprehensive comparison performance among these restraining conducted through Incremental Dynamic Analysis fragility Additionally, seismic-induced system assessed from an energetic point view. The results show that, TSDs strategy, satisfactory between demands be obtained small-to medium-intensity during large-intensity earthquakes substantially increase legs.
